___ and ___ have chosen to incorporate the ancient Celtic ritual of Handfasting into their wedding ceremony today as a symbol of their binding their lives together in the union of matrimony. In ancient times in the British Isles it was performed by a priest or priestess, who would invoke the energies of the four natural elements to create a sacred space in which the couple could be joined.

___ and ___, will you honor and respect one another, and seek to never break that honor?
“We will.” (The first loop is draped over the couple’s hands.)
And so, the first binding is made.
Will you share each other’s pain and seek to ease it?
“We will.” (The second loop is draped over the couple’s hands.)
And so, the binding is made.
Will you share the burdens of each so that your spirits may grow in this union?
“We will.” (The third loop is draped over the couple’s hands)
And so, the binding is made.
___ and ___ , as your hands are bound together now, so your lives and spirits are joined in a union of love and trust. Above you are the stars and below you is the earth. Like the stars your love should be a constant source of light and like the earth, a firm foundation from which to grow.

"Today, you stand as two separate people, with your own unique lives, personalities, and spirits—beautiful and whole on your own, represented by these two individual vessels of sand.

As you now blend your sand together, watch as the individual grains join in a way that can never be separated. They will not lose their unique colors or shapes, but will be interwoven forever.

This symbolizes the promise you make today: to blend your lives together, to support one another without losing your individual selves, and to create a new, single family that is stronger and more beautiful together than either could be alone."

(Couple pour their sand.)

"Just as this sand is now permanently joined, so too are your lives and hearts."

Cup Ceremonies
1 cup and 2 separate blendable drinks.

(The couple each holds a small vessel with a different colored liquid.)

"(Name) and (Name), you each hold a liquid, unique in its color and character, representing the beautiful individuals you are today.

As you now pour them into this single cup, watch as they blend, creating something new. They do not erase each other; instead, they merge into a harmonious whole, just as your two lives are now uniting.

Now, you will both drink from this single, shared cup. This act is your promise to continually nourish your union, to share equally in the joys and challenges of your life together, and to always draw from the same well of love, trust, and commitment you have created today."

(They pour the liquids together and share a drink from the unified cup.)
"May this blend remind you that your marriage is a creation of both of you—a unique and beautiful harmony of your individual spirits, shared sip by sip, day by day."
